  • Gold Care

Every item of gold jewellery is the result of millions upon millions of years of formation, kept secret, deep beneath the surface of the Earth. As such, to wear gold is a remarkable privilege; it’s a moment of transcendence, and something that has the power to instill a deep sense of confidence, natural beauty, and complete freedom.

As we all know, your gold jewellery deserves the very utmost in careful attention and admiration, and in order to ensure it brings a lifetime of inspiration, it’s important to know how best to take care of it. Here’s a quick guide featuring all you need to know about looking after your gold jewellery items from Smykke.

    • Remember: gold is soft and malleable. As such, it is susceptible to dents, dings, and scratches. Be sure to remove your item of gold jewellery at any occasion you feel its beauty and perfection may be at risk of damage, and keep it safely separate from other harder items of jewellery you may have in your collection.
    • Chlorine and gold are never a good combination. Chlorine will weaken the structure of your gold jewellery, and can cause the item to break with repeated exposure. As such, please do not wear your gold Smykke in the pool, or while using chlorine-based cleaning products.
    • Remove your gold jewellery when taking a bath or shower. Why? Because soaps and detergents easily build up a residue on gold, which can cause them to lose their lustre and shine.
    • Remember to put on your gold jewellery last when getting ready. Perfumes, cosmetics, and chemicals in hairspray can all have a negative impact on gold.

No matter where you go or what you do in life, we always find ourselves exposed to the elements, and to certain pollutants and substances which have the ability - over time - to cause damage to our precious jewellery. Simply cycling through the city, taking a walk along the coast, or enjoying the delights of your favourite restaurant will expose your gold jewellery to potentially harmful substances. However, with proper care, attention, and regular cleaning, you can keep your gold Smykke as bright, beautiful, and lustrous as you deserve it to be.

    • Gold jewellery should be washed regularly, with a soapy water mixture of approximately ten parts warm water to two parts dish soap. Soak your jewellery in the water for three hours to remove all traces of residue, cosmetics, natural oils, and pollutants from outside, and then scrub gently with a soft jewellery brush, or rub with a soft cloth.
    • If you want to give your gold jewellery an extra shine, you can use a jewellery polishing cloth after they have soaked and dried. Avoid using paper towels or tissue, as these can cause small scratches.
    • Don’t overdo it! While we recommend regular cleaning of your jewellery, it should only be undertaken when the gold has lost some of its lustre or when it looks visibly unclean. Also, be sure to only ever use jewellery and gold-friendly cleaning products - never, ever use bleach or chlorine on your gold.
